Do not sprout or plant it. Berlin Seeds alfalfa seed sold online to New York is recalled.

Berlin Seeds sold the recalled Alfalfa Sprouting Seed through its website to New York customers from February 13 through August 23. If the brand and product match, stop using it immediately.

The small bags do not have a lot code

The recall covers five sizes: 1/4 pound, 1/2 pound, 1 pound, 5 pounds and 50 pounds. The 5- and 50-pound packages carry lot code SAL2-24JB in the bottom-right corner of the label. The three smaller packages do not carry a lot code, so the absence of a code does not clear a smaller matching bag.

FDA's notice does not publish a UPC. For a smaller bag, match the Berlin Seeds brand, the Alfalfa Sprouting Seed name, the package size and the purchase window. If an order may match, keep it out of use and contact Berlin Seeds rather than waiting for a lot code that is not there.

New York online sales are confirmed; a Rockland purchase is not

Berlin Seeds says it sold the seed at its Millersburg, Ohio, store and through its website from February 13 through August 23. New York is among the states where website customers received orders.

That creates a possible path into a Rockland home, garden or sprouting setup. It does not establish that a Rockland resident or business bought the seed. The Rockland Edit has not confirmed a local purchase or illness.

Seal it, throw it away and clean what it touched

Berlin Seeds says to seal a possible match in a bag and place it in the trash. Carefully clean and sanitize any jars, trays, sprouters or surfaces the seed or sprouts touched. Do not eat sprouts already grown from the recalled seed.

The company says the seed may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, known as STEC, and/or Salmonella. Anyone who ate the product and feels ill should contact a healthcare provider.

One illness was reported directly to Berlin Seeds, according to the announcement. The notice does not identify the person's location, condition or outcome.

Berlin Seeds can be reached at 877-464-0892, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST, or at order@berlinseeds.life. The company says email inquiries are answered during the same business hours.

No other Berlin Seeds sprouting seeds are included, according to the announcement. The useful check is exact: Berlin Seeds, Alfalfa Sprouting Seed, one of the five listed sizes, the February 13–August 23 sale window and—only for 5- or 50-pound packages—lot code SAL2-24JB.

What changes for a resident: anyone who bought Berlin Seeds Alfalfa Sprouting Seed through the company's website during the sale window should stop using it and must not sprout, plant, eat or give away a possible match.
