BENEFITS EXPLAINER — PUBLIC RECORD

Social Security's 2027 increase: the announcement and the payment are different dates.

For Rockland households that receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income, there is a confirmed adjustment to plan around—but not an immediate increase in this month's payment. SSA announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 on October 14.

SSA's announced 3.6 percent 2027 cost-of-living adjustment: Social Security payments in January 2027; January SSI paid December 31, 2026. Individual amounts and deductions vary.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)December 31, 2026, for January 2027

The SSA announcement ↗ and dated benefit FAQ ↗ confirm those starting points. They do not give every Social Security recipient the same January deposit day.

SSA's Chief Actuary explanation ↗ distinguishes December Social Security benefits, payable in January, from January SSI. Because January 1 is a holiday, that SSI payment arrives at the end of December. It is January's payment arriving early, not an extra monthly benefit.

Use your notice, not the average, for your budget

SSA estimates an average monthly retirement-benefit increase of $75. That is a national average—not a flat $75 for everyone or an estimate for Rockland specifically. The agency says the individual COLA notice will show the new benefit amount, dates and deductions. The percentage alone does not establish a person's final bank deposit.

The annual adjustment follows the Social Security Act's CPI-W inflation formula, as explained by SSA's actuary. This guide reports the announced adjustment; it does not calculate an individual entitlement, a New York SSI supplement or a 2027 Medicare premium.

One optional notice-access step

For online COLA notices, SSA's October 14 instructions identify November 18, 2026 as the account-creation and paperless-enrollment cutoff. That date concerns online notice access, not an application deadline for the COLA. People not enrolled in paperless notices are to receive mailed notices in December.

Start with SSA's own account page ↗ and review your personal notice when available. Do not send Social Security numbers, passwords or benefit letters to The Rockland Edit or post them in comments.

Sources checked October 15, 2026, in the 10:54 p.m. EDT cycle. SSA's October 14 release says online notices start in late November; its same-date retirement/disability FAQ says early December. We have not reconciled that difference and do not promise a first-view date. The rate and first-payment dates agree across the linked sources. No private account or individual benefit record was reviewed.
