VETERANS & COST OF LIVING — SERVICE EXPLAINER
Have VGLI? Check how your premium is paid.
For Rockland residents with existing Veterans' Group Life Insurance, there is a break to plan around: VA has approved a premium holiday for eligible insureds from November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027, with coverage continuing under the policy's terms. That is not an instruction to stop paying today.

First, check the program and account
VA's FAQ ↗ says active VGLI coverage on November 1 qualifies automatically; coverage canceled or lapsed by October 31 does not. Past-due balances still must be paid. This is VGLI only—not SGLI, FSGLI, TSGLI, VALife or S-DVI.
The payment method matters
| How you pay | What VA says |
|---|---|
| Military-retirement or VA-disability deductions | Pause and resume automatically. |
| OSGLI AutoPay | Collects only premiums outside the covered months. |
| Your bank's recurring bill pay | Contact the bank to stop payments effective November 1, 2026, and restart February 1, 2027. |
Before changing bank payments, confirm which amounts remain due. A bill can include arrears or periods outside the holiday. Prepaid covered premiums receive credits; do not assume a cash refund arrives automatically.
Recently enrolled or reinstated? The first premium is still required; this guide does not determine your effective-date eligibility. Ask OSGLI about your account: 800-419-1473, weekdays, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Eastern.
The useful next step is a billing check—not canceling coverage or ignoring a bill. The Rockland Edit has not accessed any policyholder account or verified a local recipient count.
Original sources checked October 20, 2026: VA's Life Insurance homepage ↗ (visibly updated September 16) and its linked holiday FAQ (visibly updated September 15). Those page dates are not a newly announced October 20 benefit. This is general reader service for existing VGLI policyholders, not individualized insurance advice, an enrollment recommendation or a guide to new/reinstated-policy effective dates. Confirm account-specific instructions with OSGLI.
