Check the jar. Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce is recalled.

The pantry check is narrow: a 23-ounce plastic jar, UPC 04119005677, and a June 16, 2027 best-by date. If all three details match, do not eat it—return it to the store for a refund or replacement.

Why Wakefern recalled it

Wakefern says routine FDA testing found patulin above food-safety limits. Patulin is a naturally occurring substance produced by molds that can grow on damaged or bruised apples and may be present in food made from affected fruit.

The company says the recalled product should not be consumed. It reported no illnesses or injuries associated with the product as of its September 14 announcement. That is not a reason to keep or eat a matching jar.

Do not broaden the recall to every applesauce jar

The announcement names one Wholesome Pantry product, one package size, one UPC and one best-by date. Wakefern says no other products sold through the listed supermarket banners are affected. A similar jar without all four identifiers is not included in this announcement.

If the UPC or date is hard to read, compare the jar with the official product photograph on the FDA page or call ShopRite before deciding what to do.

ShopRite distribution is confirmed; a Rockland jar is not

Wakefern says the affected product was distributed through ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market. In a separate company record, Wakefern says an affiliated operator runs four ShopRite stores in Rockland County. Together, those records give local shoppers a concrete reason to check the pantry.

They do not identify which individual stores received recalled inventory. The Rockland Edit has not confirmed a Rockland shipment, shelf, purchase, illness or injury.

How to use the return route

Wakefern says customers may return an exact match to the store for an immediate refund or replacement. For questions, call 1-800-746-7748, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The announcement does not identify the time zone, so those hours are presented as published.
