CONSUMER SAFETY RECALL — BURN HAZARD

Own a Bodum French press? Check the size, model and glass.

Bodum recalled 5.9 million 8- and 12-cup French presses with replaceable glass carafes after identifying 70 breakage reports, including 48 reports of burns. Stop stirring with metal utensils now, and do not use a cracked or damaged carafe.

The practical check

  • Size: 8-cup or 12-cup.
  • Carafe: replaceable glass.
  • Models: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper or Kenya.
  • Action: stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir; do not use cracked or damaged glass; request Bodum's free plastic spoon and warning label.

Which presses are included

The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup versions of eight Bodum models with replaceable glass carafes: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya. CPSC says the Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most models and is engraved on the glass carafe with product warnings.

A different capacity, a model outside that list or a press without a replaceable glass carafe is not identified in the October 29 federal recall. Use the Bodum recall site ↗ for the additional model photographs and identifying information rather than guessing from a similar shape.

The remedy is not a blanket stop-use order

CPSC's immediate instruction is to stop using metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir inside the glass carafe. Bodum is providing a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label. The label reminds owners not to use cracked or damaged carafes and not to use metal utensils, which can damage the glass and lead to breakage during use.

The federal notice does not promise a refund, a replacement press or a replacement glass carafe. If the carafe is cracked or damaged, do not use it. Contact Bodum before deciding what to do with the press.

Call 888-879-8213, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, email Bodum3302@sedgwick.com, or use the recall site to request the free spoon and warning label.

Why the recall matters—and the local limit

Bodum USA identified 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns. Those reports explain the burn warning; they do not establish that every recalled carafe will break.

The presses were sold from 1974 through October 2026 for about $15 to $65 at Target, Walmart, coffee and home-goods stores nationwide and through Bodum, Amazon, Target, Walmart and other online retailers. Broad national sales make local ownership plausible, but the reviewed record does not confirm a Rockland purchase, breakage incident or burn.

What this changes for a Rockland resident: before the next brew, confirm the size and model, inspect the glass, put away the metal spoon and request Bodum's free repair materials.

The article preserves CPSC's covered sizes and models, incident count, sales period and remedy. No reviewed record identifies a Rockland owner, transaction or injury.
