SERVICE UPDATE COMMUNITY & ACCESS

East Ramapo says free pre-K openings are available. Here’s how to apply.

The district’s current application page says there are openings in both full-day and half-day Universal Pre-K programs. The tuition-free program is for children who live in East Ramapo and turn 4 by December 1, 2026. Families should call before choosing a site because the district does not publish a live seat count or start date for a late placement.

What the district has confirmed

  • Openings: the district says full-day and half-day places are available.
  • Cost: the program is tuition-free.
  • Age: a child must turn 4 on or before December 1, 2026.
  • Residency: the child must live within the East Ramapo Central School District.
  • Schedule: children attend five days a week for 180 school days; full-day programs run five hours and half-day programs run 2½ hours.
  • Transportation: the district says it is not provided.

Applications are posted in four languages

East Ramapo’s current UPK application page ↗ links forms in English with Yiddish included, Spanish ↗ and Haitian Creole ↗. The English form is linked from the same district page.

The district also says a complete physical exam must be documented before the child starts. The public page does not spell out every record a particular family will need or how quickly a late application can be processed, so use the application as the start of the process—not as confirmation that placement is complete.

A site address does not change who is eligible

East Ramapo lists more than 50 participating preschools and child centers, including sites in several Rockland villages. Those are provider locations. The district’s eligibility rule still requires the child to live within East Ramapo’s boundaries.

Because transportation is not provided, compare the program hours and location before naming a preference. A center listed on the district site may be outside the family’s home village.

Call before relying on a particular opening

The district page confirms openings at the program level, but it does not provide a live count by provider, say that every listed center has space, or give a guaranteed start date. Call the East Ramapo UPK office at 845-577-6114 to confirm the current full-day or half-day options, site availability, required records and next start date before traveling.

The useful move is straightforward: if the age and residency rules fit, open the application in the language you prefer and call the UPK office before choosing a site. The district says openings exist, but the phone check is what turns that general availability into a workable placement plan.
