Using Sloatsburg Station? Check whether this is a bus day.
NJ Transit says Coach USA buses are replacing Port Jervis Line trains at Sloatsburg and every station west of Suffern during three scheduled infrastructure-work windows. Trains continue between Suffern and Hoboken, but the weekday and weekend patterns are different.
The three work windows
- Sunday, September 13: buses replace trains from Port Jervis through Sloatsburg from 4 a.m. until 12:30 a.m. Monday.
- Weekdays, September 14–November 13: buses replace trains west of Suffern from approximately 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
- Weekends, September 19–October 12: substitute busing runs from 12:30 a.m. Saturday until 12:30 a.m. Monday.
- Transfer point: NJ Transit directs riders traveling to or from stations beyond Suffern to transfer between trains and buses at Ramsey Route 17.
- Plan extra time: use the temporary schedule for the exact trip and check live alerts before leaving.
Sloatsburg and Suffern do not have the same instruction
Sloatsburg is inside the bus-replacement territory. If a trip begins or ends there during one of the listed work windows, use the temporary Port Jervis Line schedule and expect a bus segment.
Suffern remains on the train side of the service plan. NJ Transit says all weekday trains operate normally between Suffern and Hoboken. On weekends, local trains operate between Suffern and Hoboken, but there is no express service.
The connection is at Ramsey Route 17
For travel to or from a station beyond Suffern—including Sloatsburg—NJ Transit’s advisory says the transfer between the train and substitute bus happens at Ramsey Route 17 Station on both weekdays and weekends. Do not assume the transfer is at Suffern simply because that is where the normal-train segment begins.
The operator has published separate weekday temporary schedule ↗ and weekend temporary schedule ↗. Those PDFs mark substitute-bus times and should control the exact trip.
This is planned construction service, not a storm cancellation
NJ Transit attributes the substitution to infrastructure improvements, including railroad-tie and switch replacement. The advisory remains posted after Rockland’s Flash Flood Warning expired, so the planned bus service should not be described as a weather response.
A live “on time” line label does not erase a scheduled bus segment. Before leaving, open the full NJ Transit advisory ↗, choose the correct temporary schedule and allow extra travel time.
What changes for a resident: a Sloatsburg rider must use substitute buses during the listed work windows and transfer at Ramsey Route 17 for travel beyond Suffern; Suffern–Hoboken trains continue, with weekday trains operating normally and weekend local trains running without express service.
