The date code is the deciding detail
The recall covers 20-ounce Hero Fire Spray fire-suppression canisters marked 09/2024 on the base. CPSC describes red-and-blue or red canisters with “HERO Fire Spray” on the front and a black release tab.
Other date codes are not named in this notice. A familiar brand name or similar-looking canister is not enough to establish that it is recalled.
The hazard exists in storage and in an emergency
CPSC says the recalled canister can deteriorate over time. It may rupture while stored or fail to work during a fire, creating fire, burn, serious-injury and death hazards.
The federal notice covers about 31,000 canisters sold through PreparedHero.com and Amazon from October 2024 through January 2026 for roughly $18 to $30. Prepared Hero had received nine reports of canisters exploding or deteriorating in storage; CPSC reported no injuries as of September 10.
Replacement and disposal are two separate steps
Register through Prepared Hero’s official recall page ↗ for a free replacement and the company’s disposal instructions. CPSC says to place the canister in a box marked “RECALLED,” contact a municipal household-hazardous-waste facility before traveling and follow that facility’s directions.
Do not put the pressurized canister in household trash or recycling. Do not puncture or discharge it to make disposal easier.
Call Rockland Green before transporting it
Rockland Green operates the County’s household-hazardous-waste facility at 35 Firemens Memorial Drive in Pomona. Its public page lists weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 845-364-2444 for household-hazardous-waste questions.
That page does not specifically confirm that the facility accepts this recalled fire-spray canister. Call first, identify the product and date code, and follow staff instructions on whether and how to transport it. A general facility listing is not permission to arrive with a pressurized item.
What is—and is not—confirmed locally
The recall applies to products sold online nationwide, giving Rockland residents a concrete household check. The Rockland Edit has not confirmed a Rockland purchaser, canister, rupture, fire or injury.
The useful sequence is simple: look at the base, stop using a canister marked 09/2024, register for the replacement, and call Rockland Green before moving it. Keep the canister intact and out of trash and recycling while you wait for instructions.
