Three Rockland fire departments will share $462,694. Here's what the State has—and hasn't—said.
New York has awarded capital grants to fire agencies in Pearl River, Suffern and West Nyack. The three amounts are confirmed in a September 16 state record; the project-level plans behind them are not.

What the grant program can pay for
The Volunteer Fire Infrastructure & Response Equipment program—usually shortened to V-FIRE—is administered by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. The State says this round can support new or renovated fire stations, classrooms, meeting spaces and training centers.
Eligible equipment purposes include personal protective equipment, PPE washers and dryers, decontamination equipment and supplies, and exhaust-removal systems. The program can also support consolidation or regionalization that expands mutual-aid capacity beyond one department's ordinary boundaries.
What is still missing from the public record
The State's announcement lists each award recipient and amount, but it does not say what Pearl River, Suffern or West Nyack proposed to buy, renovate or build. It also does not identify any local match, procurement plan, construction schedule, award agreement or vote tied to these three grants.
That matters because an award amount alone cannot establish a project's total cost—or whether a particular purchase or building change is imminent. Those claims need department-level applications, agreements, budgets or meeting records that were not attached to the State announcement.
Three of seven Mid-Hudson awards are in Rockland
The State lists seven Mid-Hudson awards totaling $2,357,959. Pearl River, Suffern and West Nyack account for three of those seven recipients. Statewide, 65 volunteer fire departments and districts received a combined $25 million in this round.
New York says the program is intended to offset some of the pressure from rising equipment and construction costs so local taxpayers do not bear the full cost of eligible safety upgrades. That statewide rationale is not proof of a specific property-tax reduction in any Rockland district.
What changes for a resident: three Rockland fire agencies now have $462,694 in confirmed state capital awards; the next accountability question is what each department will buy or build, and on what timeline.
