SERVICE UPDATE CLOSEOUT COMMUNITY & ACCESS

Rockland’s September 8 sharps collection has ended. Here’s how to find another date.

Both posted September 8 windows have passed. Do not make an unscheduled drop-off. Keep household needles, syringes or lancets secured in an approved sharps container, then call the County program to verify another date and location.

After the posted window

  • Status: The 10 a.m.–noon and 6–8 p.m. September 8 sessions have ended.
  • Do not: make an unscheduled drop-off or take sharps to the household-hazardous-waste facility.
  • Keep secured: household needles, syringes or lancets belong in an approved sharps container.
  • Verify another collection: call 845-364-2762 and confirm the date, location and entrance before traveling.

Who can use the collection

The County program is for Rockland residents who use sharps at home for self-medication. Its brochure lists diabetes, cancer and allergies as examples, but those examples are not the full definition. The collection is not for private physicians' offices, healthcare agencies or other medical businesses.

An approved container is part of the plan

The County says needles, syringes and lancets should be placed in an approved sharps container, available from a pharmacy or surgical-supply house. Keep the sharps secured while verifying another collection; the public records do not promise that a site will supply a replacement container.

Do not take sharps to the hazardous-waste facility

Rockland's current waste-management page says sharps are not accepted at the household-hazardous-waste facility. The County brochure also says not to put them in a town recycling program. The September 8 Building A collection has ended, and unscheduled drop-offs are not accepted.

Call before traveling

The County directs residents to call the disposal location before bringing sharps. The program brochure lists 845-364-2762 for the September 8 location. Ask the County to confirm another scheduled date, location and entrance before traveling.

The useful move now: leave household sharps secured in an approved container, call 845-364-2762 and verify another scheduled collection. Do not attempt an unscheduled drop-off.
