The 2026 Summer EBT deadline has passed. Here’s what families can still check.

New York’s September 8 application deadline has passed. The State says an application received later will be reviewed for the 2027 program year; that does not mean a child who was already enrolled automatically or whose household applied on time lost the 2026 benefit.

This deadline is easy to miss because New York now provides free school breakfast and lunch broadly. Summer EBT uses a different eligibility process. The State says receiving free meals at school does not necessarily mean a child is automatically enrolled in Summer EBT.

Start with the eligibility checker

New York’s official eligibility tool ↗ helps a parent or guardian determine whether a child may already be enrolled or whether the household should apply. The tool requires an NY.Gov account, but using it is not the same as submitting an application.

The State says automatic enrollment generally includes eligible children who receive SNAP, Temporary cash Assistance or Medicaid, as well as children whom their school has individually determined eligible for free or reduced-price meals. If a child is automatically eligible, the State says not to submit another application.

Who needed to apply

A family needed to apply for 2026 if the child was not enrolled automatically and met the application rules. The State says the child must have attended a school participating in the National School Lunch Program and the household’s gross income must have been at or below 185% of the federal poverty level. The official 2026 income table ↗ lists the limits by household size and pay period.

The State portal says applications received after September 8 will be reviewed for 2027. It does not describe a general late route for the 2026 program. A family that submitted by the deadline should keep its confirmation or paper-mailing record and use the official account, notice or helpline to check what happened next.

What the benefit provides

Each eligible child receives a one-time $120 benefit that can be used like SNAP to buy eligible food at participating grocery stores, farmers’ markets and other retailers. The State says Summer EBT funds expire 122 days after they are issued and cannot be restored after removal, so a family should check the issuance date rather than counting from the application deadline.

What September 8 closed

The deadline applies to applications for the 2026 program year. New York says an application received after September 8 will be reviewed for the 2027 Summer EBT program instead. This article cannot determine a child’s eligibility, confirm that a benefit was issued or replace a State notice.

The useful next step is verification, not a late-application promise: check automatic enrollment, preserve proof of an on-time application and confirm any issuance date. Free school meals and Summer EBT are connected food supports, but they are not the same enrollment decision.
