WEATHER SERVICE UPDATE — SAFETY, TRAVEL & WEEKEND PLANS
Rockland has wind and Hudson River flood advisories through the weekend.
NWS extended Rockland's Wind Advisory six hours, through noon Sunday. The advisory allows gusts up to 50 mph, heavy rain is possible overnight and low-lying places along the Hudson may flood around high tide.
What to act on
- Wind Advisory: extended through noon Sunday, September 27.
- Wind: the Wind Advisory calls for north winds 20–30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Rockland's detailed forecast carries gusts up to 45 mph tonight and Sunday.
- Hudson River Flood Advisory: in effect through 2 p.m. Sunday.
- Rain: periods of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are possible after midnight and Sunday morning.
- Hudson tides: NWS expected the highest water Saturday morning, but minor to locally moderate tidal flooding remains possible around successive high tides through Sunday.
- State declaration: the governor's storm emergency declaration names Long Island, New York City and Westchester County—not Rockland.
- Before leaving: check the latest road, transit, event and weather updates rather than assuming a plan is unchanged.
- Suffern: Saturday night's Spirit Day fireworks and Sunday's Spirit Day are postponed. The Village has not announced replacement dates.
- Bites & Brews: the organizer moved the Clover Stadium event from today to Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; live music is listed from noon to 3 p.m.
- Nyack music festival: two current local reports and a participating performer say the September 26 porchfest moved to October 3. The organizer's own website still shows the old date, so do not travel today and recheck the schedule before October 3.
The local hazards are wind and tidal Hudson flooding
The National Weather Service says Rockland's long-duration north wind could move unsecured objects, bring down tree limbs and cause a few power outages. The Wind Advisory calls for gusts up to 50 mph; Rockland's detailed forecast carries gusts up to 45 mph. Driving may be difficult for high-profile vehicles. Bring in or secure loose outdoor items and use extra care on exposed roads.
A separate Flood Advisory covers the Hudson River in Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Westchester counties. NWS expected the highest water around Saturday morning's high tide, but says successive high-tide cycles from Saturday into Sunday can still bring minor to locally moderate tidal flooding in low-lying places. The advisory does not establish that every waterfront road, park or property will flood.
Rain and gusts continue Saturday and Sunday
NWS's 3:23 p.m. Rockland forecast calls for periods of rain this evening, then rain that may be heavy at times with isolated thunderstorms after midnight. Rain and isolated thunderstorms continue Sunday morning, with forecast gusts up to 45 mph. Sunday night may also bring heavy rainfall in thunderstorms.
The 3:09 p.m. Hazardous Weather Outlook says localized flash flooding is possible through Sunday night. NWS has not posted a Flash Flood Watch or Warning for Rockland. Its 4:55 p.m. forecast discussion says poor-drainage, low-lying and urban ponding is the more common rain-flooding concern, while localized flash flooding remains possible. Do not drive into standing water or around a barricade. If a low-lying road, Hudson River route or parking area is part of the plan, check its current status close to departure.
The state emergency declaration does not name Rockland
Governor Kathy Hochul's September 26 storm update says the State of Emergency declared Friday covers Long Island, New York City and Westchester County. It does not list Rockland County. The same state update says the storm is affecting the lower Mid-Hudson and that rain, wind damage and outages are possible farther north and west, so the absence of Rockland from the declaration is not an all-clear.
The state tells drivers to treat a dark traffic signal as an all-way stop: come to a complete stop, then take turns through the intersection. Charge phones and essential devices, keep flashlights and fresh batteries ready, stay away from downed lines and report an outage directly to the utility. Enable government emergency alerts or text ROCKLAND to 333111 for New York State weather and emergency alerts.
Weekend transit is planned, but the operator may adjust it
NJ Transit says Main/Bergen County, Pascack Valley, bus and Access Link service are expected to operate regular weekend schedules. It also says storm impacts could force adjustments and tells riders to check live information before traveling and allow extra time.
The storm notice does not replace the separate, scheduled Port Jervis Line construction plan: Sloatsburg and stations west of Suffern use substitute buses during the weekend work window, while local trains continue between Suffern and Hoboken. Outdoor weekend plans need a same-day check
A weather advisory is not a cancellation notice. The Village of Suffern has now posted a specific change: Saturday night's Spirit Day fireworks and Sunday's Spirit Day are postponed because of the weather, and replacement dates have not been announced. The live Around Rockland calendar has removed both original dates.
The New York Boulders' current ticket page also moved Bites & Brews from Saturday, September 26, to Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with live music from noon to 3 p.m. The older tourism listing still shows the original date, so the current organizer page controls. The ticket terms remain $5 admission, no ticket required for children 4 and younger, free parking and no refunds.
The Nyack Neighborhood Music & Arts Festival is another same-day change. Rockland News quotes organizer William Bird saying it moved from September 26 to Saturday, October 3; Nyack News & Views and a participating performer publish the same replacement date. The organizer's website and Visit Nyack page still display September 26. Do not travel today based on those stale pages, and check the organizer's schedule again before October 3.
A fresh Nyack News & Views roundup also reports that the Nyack Red Bandana Memorial Tour moved from September 27 to October 4. The Historical Society of the Nyacks and Visit Nyack still display the original September 27 date, so The Rockland Edit is holding the replacement date as unresolved. Contact the organizer before traveling; do not treat either date as fully verified yet.
The Congers Fall Street Fair remains weather-sensitive unless its organizer says otherwise. Check the controlling event page before leaving; The Rockland Edit will not infer a cancellation from the forecast alone.
What changes for a resident: plan for strong wind and heavy rain through Sunday morning—six hours longer than the previous wind deadline—and continue avoiding flooded roads and low-lying Hudson riverfront areas.
