Bring the broken lamp. Rockland’s free Repair Café comes to Nyack September 27.
Volunteer Repair Coaches will evaluate broken household items and try to fix them at no charge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Nyack Center. Call before hauling over a bulky or unusual item: a repair depends on the right coach and necessary materials being available.
Before you go
- When: Sunday, September 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Where: The Nyack Center, 58 Depew Avenue, Nyack.
- Cost: Evaluation and repair are free when the necessary materials are available.
- Possible items: Lamps, clothing, small appliances, wooden pieces, furniture, toys and electronics.
- Do not bring: Gas-powered equipment such as lawn mowers or chainsaws.
- Parking: The County says only street parking is available.
- Call ahead: 845-999-4070 to ask whether a coach can handle the item.
Free does not mean guaranteed
The County’s announcement says skilled volunteers will evaluate and repair broken household items for free. It also attaches two practical limits: the work is free only when the necessary materials are available, and residents are invited to call ahead to confirm that a Repair Coach can fix the type of item they plan to bring.
That phone check matters most for furniture, uncommon electronics and anything awkward to move. The public notice does not promise a specific repair, a particular replacement part or a same-day fix for every item.
What belongs at the table—and what does not
The County’s examples cover many everyday household objects: lamps, clothing, small appliances, wooden pieces, furniture, toys and electronics. The list is illustrative, not a promise that every item in those categories can be repaired.
Gas-powered equipment is specifically excluded. Leave lawn mowers, chainsaws and similar machines at home. For an item that sits somewhere between the examples and the exclusion, call before traveling.
Plan for street parking
The event is indoors at The Nyack Center, but the County says only street parking will be available. Anyone bringing a heavy piece should account for the walk from the car and confirm that a suitable coach is expected before unloading it.

The useful move: choose the broken household item that has been waiting for attention, then call before carrying it downtown. The evaluation and repair may be free, but the right volunteer and materials still have to be there.
